The Opportunity: Part-Time Data Engineering Specialist

Information Engineering at careerzynith is far more than a technical role — it is a position that sits at the intersection of technology, business strategy, and creative storytelling. As a Part-Time Data Engineering Specialist, you will be responsible for building robust systems to process data efficiently and modeling information to power analytics that influence decisions affecting hundreds of millions of members worldwide.

Your solutions may range from sophisticated batch data pipelines that bring to life critical business metrics to real-time processing services that integrate seamlessly with our core product features. You will work on systems that handle petabytes of data, supporting everything from content recommendation algorithms to financial forecasting models. To excel in this role, you will need a rich understanding of large distributed systems on which our data solutions depend. We expect our engineers to have knowledge across several of these skill areas and to be deep in at least one.

Beyond technical expertise, strong communication skills are absolutely essential. You will collaborate extensively with business stakeholders, software engineering teams, and data science groups to foster a culture of learning, experimentation, and data-informed decision-making throughout the organization. This part-time position offers flexible scheduling, making it ideal for professionals seeking meaningful work with a flexible commitment, students pursuing advanced degrees, parents returning to the workforce, or experienced engineers looking to maintain work-life balance while contributing to cutting-edge projects.

Work Location: We are considering candidates located in Mexico City as well as fully-remote candidates within Mexico. This role offers complete flexibility to work from home, allowing you to structure your schedule around your most productive hours while remaining deeply connected to the team through virtual collaboration tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Build Data Pipelines: Develop, implement, and maintain scalable data processing systems that efficiently handle web-scale datasets, transforming raw data into structured, queryable formats that power business intelligence and analytics across careerzynith.
  • Model Complex Data Structures: Create robust data models that accurately represent business processes, member behaviors, content performance, and operational metrics, enabling stakeholders to derive meaningful insights and make data-informed decisions.
  • Develop Real-Time Processing Services: Build streaming data solutions that integrate directly with core product features, supporting real-time personalization, recommendation systems, and member engagement initiatives that define the careerzynith experience.
  • Collaborate Across Teams: Partner closely with business analysts, product managers, software engineers, and data scientists to understand requirements, translate business questions into technical solutions, and ensure data quality throughout the pipeline lifecycle.
  • Optimize Distributed Systems: Continuously monitor, troubleshoot, and enhance the performance of large-scale distributed data systems, identifying bottlenecks and implementing solutions that improve reliability, reduce latency, and lower operational costs.
  • Champion Data Quality: Establish and enforce data quality standards, implementing validation checks, monitoring frameworks, and documentation practices that ensure the integrity of information flowing through careerzynith systems.
  • Document Technical Solutions: Create comprehensive technical documentation, runbooks, and knowledge-sharing materials that enable team members, stakeholders, and future engineers to understand, maintain, and extend the data infrastructure.
  • Support Machine Learning Initiatives: Collaborate with data science teams to build and maintain feature stores, training datasets, and inference pipelines that power the machine learning models behind personalization, content recommendation, and audience segmentation at careerzynith.
  • Embrace Independent Work: Operate with a high degree of autonomy, taking ownership of projects from conception through delivery while proactively communicating progress, blockers, and insights to team members and stakeholders.
  • Stay Current with Technology: Evaluate emerging tools, frameworks, and best practices in the data engineering ecosystem, recommending and implementing innovations that keep careerzynith at the forefront of technological capability.

Essential Qualifications

  • Programming Proficiency: You are talented in at least one major programming language commonly used in data engineering, such as Java, Scala, or Python, and you are comfortable writing elegant, maintainable, and well-tested code. You take pride in your craft and continuously seek to improve your technical skills.
  • SQL Expertise: You possess strong SQL skills and are comfortable working with relational databases, writing complex queries, optimizing performance, and modeling data for analytical workloads.
  • Distributed Systems Knowledge: You have a strong background in at least one of the following areas: distributed data processing, software engineering of data services, or data modeling. You understand the trade-offs between consistency, availability, and partition tolerance in distributed architectures.
  • Big Data Technologies: You are familiar with large-scale data processing technologies such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, or similar frameworks, and you are comfortable working with web-scale datasets containing billions of records.
  • Detail Orientation: You have an exceptional eye for detail, strong data intuition, and a genuine passion for data quality. You understand that trustworthy data is the foundation of trustworthy decisions.
  • Documentation Skills: You appreciate the importance of excellent documentation and possess strong data debugging skills, enabling you to trace issues through complex pipelines and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Adaptability: You are comfortable working in a rapidly changing environment with ambiguous requirements. You are nimble, take smart risks, and thrive when given the freedom to determine the best path forward.
  • Cultural Alignment: You relate to and embrace many of the elements of the careerzynith culture. You enjoy working independently while also collaborating effectively, and you value giving and receiving candid, constructive feedback.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure, including managed services for data warehousing, stream processing, and orchestration.
  • Familiarity with modern data orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, or Prefect for managing complex pipeline dependencies.
  • Experience with data warehousing solutions such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, or Databricks.
  • Knowledge of containerization and infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform.
  • Understanding of machine learning workflows and experience supporting data science teams with feature engineering and model deployment.
  • Previous experience in the media, entertainment, streaming, or subscription-based business models.
  • Contributions to open-source data engineering projects or active participation in the data engineering community.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish, given our focus on candidates in Mexico.

Skills and Competencies for Success

To thrive as a Part-Time Data Engineering Specialist at careerzynith, you will draw upon a diverse blend of technical and interpersonal skills. Problem-solving sits at the core of this role — you will encounter novel challenges daily, from optimizing query performance on multi-petabyte datasets to designing schemas that balance flexibility with query efficiency. Analytical thinking enables you to understand complex data relationships, identify patterns, and translate business questions into technical specifications that deliver measurable value.

Collaboration is equally critical. While this is a part-time position, you will be an integral member of a distributed team, requiring you to communicate effectively through written channels, video conferences, and asynchronous collaboration tools. Self-motivation and time management are essential, as you will need to structure your work to meet deadlines while maintaining the flexibility that part-time work affords.
